Strathfield opened its first store in the Sydney suburb of Strathfield in October 1980 and since that time we have consistently grown to become one of Australia’s leading specialty retailers. In March 2005 we have 87 stores located in all mainland states and territories, and we employ over 750 team members. Our annual revenue was approaching $200 million.

In 1980 Strathfield was known as Strathfield Car Radios and car radios were our product category, together with a service that no one else could offer - installation: fitting the products into the customer's car. There was large customer demand for FM radios in cars and as many older style cars didn't have FM radio there was an excellent opportunity, which was seized. Later that decade we added a larger range of car products including radar detectors (now banned throughout Australia) and security products.

In 1987 we introduced another product category: Mobile Phones. We started to promote and sell this new technology of mobile communications... a technology that today is commonplace and still an important part of our business plans. In 1993 Australia introduced digital mobile phone network (GSM) and Strathfield was the first retailer to connect a customer and phone to this network. By this time mobile was a significant contributor to our revenue and at this time our stores numbers had continued to grow. Today we are Australia's highest profile retailer offering the choice of mobile phone carriers: Optus, Vodafone and Virgin Mobile. This model provides a seemingly 'endless' choice to our customers and is a unique difference that Strathfield has over our competitors.

In the mid 1990's we expanded our range of product categories again to include Home (TVs, DVD players, Home Entertainment) and SoHo (portable audio, computer accessories and consumables). These products provide a greater number of solutions for our customers while ensuring we attract new customers.

Our growing product range combined with our red stores, easy-to-remember name and catchy 'drive in and jive away' jingle make Strathfield one of Australia's best known retail brands.

In 1998 Strathfield became a publicly listed company. Today we have over 3,000 shareholders who have placed great trust in our ability to manage our business and return a profit to them.

We trade under two names: Strathfield for our larger size stores that carry our full product range and installation workshop; and Strathfield Connect for our smaller stores (sometimes located in shopping centres) that carry mobile phones and accessories and, on occasion, a small range of other product categories. www.strathfield.com offers a selected range of products, which service our regional, remotely-located and overseas customers who are not serviced by stores.

Our team members work together to achieve our goals, deliver results and uphold our company vision:

Strathfield is a leading, values-based retailer
combining exceptional people, quality products, innovation and strong business
practices to deliver maximum stakeholder value...
